No Kings Sets Rally Record

With 251 people attending, yesterday’s rally in Penn Yan set a new local record for 21st century peaceful group protests. Dozens of participants sang and drummed and marched around the block, while dozens more stayed at the Yates County Courthouse displaying signs and waving at passing motorists on Liberty Street. Many drivers and passengers honked and cheered the crowd in response.

NY-24 Candidate Diana Kastenbaum speaks to the crowd.

Several people spoke to those gathered, including Diana Kastenbaum, candidate for Claudia Tenney’s NY-24 seat, and Klaas Martens, local organic farmer and former candidate. Val Brechko represented the Yates County Democratic Committee. Other organizers were Allison Stewart, leading Yates Progressives, and Alex Andrasik on behalf of FLXJP.

And the signs were terrific! Many people brought their own creations, expressing opinions on a wide range of issues. See the gallery below for our growing collection of photos; click one to start viewing as a slideshow.

Spirits and commitment remained high despite the freezing wind. Although many expressed frustration and anger at the current regime in Washington, the atmosphere in Penn Yan was one of radical joy, solidarity, and warm community support. When the rally ended, some people went on to attend other rallies around the region.
